Profile of One Student
When I think about Mrs. Darwin’s 5th grade class, a lot of different faces come into my head. However, there is one student in particular that stands out above all of the others; her name is Nia Britain. Nia was always very enthusiastic in class and very polite. She was also always very full of energy, always dancing and having fun with her work. She really made me feel welcome in the classroom and we just got along very well. At the same time though, she knew that when I asked her to do something, she needed to do it. She was never afraid to ask questions if she didn’t understand something completely or if she was just curious about something. Whenever Mrs. Darwin or I would ask for a volunteer her hand would always be one of the first, if not the first one to shoot up in the air. On my last day, Nia seemed like she was the saddest one to see me go. In the card the class gave me she wrote, “I’ll miss you! From your #1 friend Nia!!!! See ya!” and then she drew a person waving goodbye. She also asked me to visit again by the end of the year. I thought that was really sweet and really describes the kind of relationship we had as teacher and student. I hope to have more students like Nia when I’m an actual teacher a few years from now. Another thing about Nia, along with all of the other students in that class, is that I hope I get to see what she grows up to be. She could literally be anything she wanted. I think that’s one of the most exciting things about teaching younger kids: giving them the knowledge they need to help them grow up and become anything they want to be.
